The People & Culture Subcommittee of the Terrebonne 200 Committee, sponsored by the Terrebonne Parish Government and Parish President Hon. Gordon E. Dove, are pleased to announce that because of the importance of this specific topic there will be a second event held to commemorate the various groups of people whose cultures have blended together to form the unique essence of Terrebonne.

Besides displays, exhibits, costumes, handouts and food, there will be an impressive lineup of presentations, including:

  • A “Smudging Ceremony” Elder Chief Shirell Parfait-Dardar, Grand Caillou-Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw; Chair, Native American Commission for the LA Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs;
  • “A Gumbo of Cultures” by Patty Whitney, Executive Director, Bayou History Center; President, Terrebonne Genealogical Society; Secretary, Lafourche Heritage Society;
  • “The Last Acadian Coast” by Dr. John Doucet, Dean of Sciences & Technology, Nicholls State University; Le Grand Réveil Acadien 2022;
  • “Canary Islanders” by Stephen Estopinol, Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana;
  • “Robert Ruffin Barrow in Terrebonne Parish” by Jason Bilello, Tour Manager for Residence Plantation & Volumnia Farm; Archival Technician for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux Archives;
  • “Finding Our Roots” by Margie Scoby, Founder and Executive Director, Finding Our Roots African American Museum;
  • “An Indian Drums Musical Presentation” by Elder Chief Albert Naquin, Isle de Jean Charles Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw;
  • “The Importance of Indigenous Peoples to Terrebonne Parish History” by Patty Ferguson-Bohnee, Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe; Clinical Professor of Law, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University; Executive Director, Indian Legal Clinic at Arizona State University.

There will also be a small Genealogy How-To Workshop, with tours of the library’s Genealogy Department.
